The Paediatric Endocrinology Training Center for West Africa
The Paediatric Endocrinology Training Center for West Africa (PETCWA)is a Sub specialty paediatrics clinical fellowship program at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba Lagos.
The subspecialty of Paediatric Endocrinology is barely established in Africa. Most African countries, the number of Paediatric endocrinologist are in the unit digit. This dearth of trained paediatric endocrinologist has led to lack of data, awareness, mobilization. Under-diagnosis/mis-diagnosis, due to inadequate knowledge, management, follow-up and maintenance of these disorders which are chronic and leads to increased infant, childhood and adolescent mortality rate.
Observation of the above led to paediatric endocrinologist collaboration between ESPE ISPAD and World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), agreed to establish two training schools in Africa. The first training center was sited in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007 called Paediatric Endocrinology Training Center for Africa (PETCA). The second is Paediatric Endocrinology Training Center for West Africa (PETCWA), Lagos, Nigeria in 2012.
The Paediatric Endocrinology training is tripartite. First six (6) months at the center. Followed by six (6) months in home country/institution and last six (6) months at the training center. A professional Fellowship certificate in Paediatric Endocrinology is awarded at the end of the program.
